Newport’s First Parklet Ribbon Cutting Today

The first parklet is coming to Newport with the ribbon cutting today, April 26 at 1:00pm at the corner of Bellevue Avenue and William Street. San Francisco introduced the concept in 2005 and they have popped up around the world in a big way. Parklets are designed to fit in parking spaces to add an opportunity for tourists and residents to relax and enjoy the scenery while walking the city. Newport’s parquet will be solar powered with charging stations for electronics. Public, private and no-profits are responsible for designing and building Newport’s first parklet, including Haven Designers Kim Salerno and was funded by the RI Foundation Centennial Grant Program. Newport’s Public Services staff built the structure and Newport in Bloom will provide plant materials.
